Hi, I never had a stomach before and within the last 3 years at the age of 50 I have developed visceral fat! I can not stand it! I am in the peri-menopause period at this time in my life and am now taking plant based Bi-est I receive from my doctor to curtail the symptoms of menopause. I rub 3 to 4 drops of the Bi-est into my wrist or thin areas of my body to balance out my hormones and control the sweating. The fat on my thighs and stomach appeared the same time I began showing signs of Menopause. I am reading many conflicting stories about how hard it is to lose weight if your hormones are not controlled. I had to cut sugary and sweet foods considerably out of my diet due to the way it made me feel sickly and it would cause me to sweat. I will it it probably once a week now if that often. I am on day 18 on my daily running regimen which is very difficult for I have not ran like this in some years. I stopped drinking juices from the grocery stores. If you feel like you’re making smart moves to lose weight but still aren’t seeing the scale prove you right, it may be because your diet contains sneaky foods that lead to bloating, water-retention (ahem, salt!), and a higher calorie intake. These quick swaps will keep you fuller longer, all while working their nutrient-powered magic.
One of the biggest questions I get is “how do I lose my belly fat? I’ve tried several things but nothing worked”. When I ask what you tried I hear 100 daily sit-ups, cutting calories drastically, excess cardio, fat burners, etc.
Drink at least 8–10 cups of water every day. Hydration helps keep your energy level up, fills you up to help you reduce your portions at meals and snacks, and helps your metabolism function at its peak. So drink up!
We’re not talking about extra pounds of stomach fat here. We’re talking about the temporary abdominal distention that plagues most everyone from time to time. Michael Jensen, MD, an endocrinologist and obesity researcher at Mayo Clinic, says unless your stomach bloating is caused by medical condition such as liver or heart disease, the only real cause is intestinal gas – not “water weight.”
Several studies show that alcohol can increase appetite and food intake, and certain types of alcohol are associated with belly fat specifically. If you’re an ale aficionado, be especially mindful of your consumption: One 2013 study review from Denmark suggests that intake of beer is associated with abdominal obesity, while a German study found that lifetime consumption of alcohol is positively related to abdominal fat in 160,000 women. (Not to mention, drinking too much alcohol can mess with your fitness goals.)
Are you committed to the work needed to lose belly fat? “Reducing belly fat takes a combination approach of a low-calorie diet that is high in fiber and low in carbohydrates and sugar along with cardiovascular and weight training,” Dr. Kashyap says. “If you are willing to do the work, you can move past genetics and lose it.”
Compare 2 cups of grapes to 1/4 cup of raisins. Either choice has a little more than 100 calories, but you’ll probably be more satisfied with the grapes. Dried fruit has its place. When used sparingly, a few raisins or dried cranberries can liven up a salad.
Of course you know that protein’s essential for a slimmer you and essential for losing belly fat—you couldn’t have made it through the Paleo and South Beach crazes without hearing all about it. But here’s why protein really needs to play a prime roll on your plate: “Your body starts to produce more insulin as you age, since your muscle and fat cells aren’t responding to it properly,” explains Louis Aronne, MD, Director of the Obesity Clinic at Cornell. And insulin promotes fat storage, especially around your belly (yippee!).
