Another part of the picture is sleep. I’ve written in the past about the dangers of sleep deprivation which one of them was weight gain. When we maintain enough hours of sleep we burn more calories. Recent studies (both in humans and animals) have linked insufficient sleep and a tendency to gain weight.

Hey Jason I saw you video on youtube and I’m willing to do what you have said but I’m extremely nervous that will it work because I’ve been trying loads of different types of fitness and literally none of them are working

“Chewing is the No. 1 tip I give to prevent bloating. Chew food until it is like applesauce in your mouth. Digestion begins in the mouth, and without proper chewing, food is not well-digested. Better-digested food means less gas and bloating.”

I understood how she felt. Obesity shortened my own father’s life, and for most of my childhood, I struggled with an extra 25 pounds as well. I figured it was my genetic destiny to be fat, too. But then I got sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I’ve made it my life’s work to learn everything there is to know about belly fat. But nothing in my 20 years of health journalism has prepared me for the groundbreaking research that has emerged in just the last year—new science that shows exactly how we can turn off our fat genes and lose weight almost automatically.

“Eating portion-controlled meals that include whole-grain foods and monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) throughout the day is the best way to eat for a flat belly: People who eat whole grains lose more abdominal fat. And making most of the fats you eat MUFAs reduces ab flab, research says.” —Keri Glassman, RD, author of The O2 Diet and The Snack Factor Diet

Remember: As you lose weight you lose weight all over and just because you lost a certain amount of weight doesn’t mean all of it will be just belly fat. Why do I still have belly fat after losing all this weight?

It might be your brunch and breakfast go-to, but there’s reason to give the silky, golden yolks some love “Egg yolks are a source of Vitamin D (a vitamin most Americans do not eat enough of). Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to abdominal obesity. Also, the (healthy) fat within the yolks will help you feel fuller longer and less likely to overeat later in the day,” offers nutritionist Kayleen St. John, RD at Natural Gourmet Institute, a health-supportive cooking school in New York City. Want to lose that belly fat? In your dreams! Seriously, though: a good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to get rid of that extra fat around your waist for good. Among the 60,000 women participating in the Nurses’ Health Study, those who snoozed for fewer than five hours a night were at the greatest risk of becoming obese and gaining 30 or more pounds over the course of the 16-year study period when compared to those who slept for seven or more hours.

Maybe you’re not sure when it happened…or how. You just know when you hit your 40s BAM! your body exploded into a fat-packing machine. That mini muffin top turned into a mountain of ripples and rolls and the belly fat battle began.

Hey Brandon (great name my brother’s name is Brandon) — the short answer is NOTHING. Let me clarify (and these are my opinions but they are backed by real world results)… the action of lifting a “weight” forces muscle fibers to react a different way and as a results the muscle building tends to be superior. Case in point… (and I have done this)… if I were to go off my weight lifting routine and simply do things like push-ups and other “body-weight” exercises my weight lifting strength has always plummeted (this happens for most people). Why? because there is just something about lifting weights that really strengthens the muscle fiber. NOW… this doesn’t mean you can’t get results dong things like push ups (you certainly can)… but in my opinion the results are not going to be the same. It’s like the difference between long distance running and sprinting. Both are “running”… but the results over time on the human body are very different. Sprinters tend to get “ripped” while long distance runners tend to lose muscle because there bodies are adapting to “oxygen” needs. First of all I’d do whatever I can to lift weights… but if I… Read more »

Chronic stress experienced over a long period of time is considered not only dangerous — raising your risk for heart disease, diabetes, mental disorders and autoimmune diseases to name a few — but it’s tied to fat gain and poor eating habits.

So I purchased the book, read it, and have now begun to implement the advice. In only two weeks I can already see results. Although I’m already fairly lean, I’ve struggled for six years to get rid of the last bit of stomach fat caused by pregnancy. But finally there’s been a breakthrough. The area is noticeably firmer and I’m already feeling so much better about myself. I can see that if a person follows all of the advice in Mike’s book, then they will achieve results. He knows what he’s talking about and it is so refreshing to have someone pass on the knowledge that’s actually going to work.

The trouble with belly fat is that it’s not limited to the extra layer of padding located just below the skin (subcutaneous fat). It also includes visceral fat — which lies deep inside your abdomen, surrounding your internal organs.

Visceral fat is also called “organ fat” or “intra-abdominal fat” — and it’s one of the primary reasons why you must learn how to lose belly fat. This stubborn fat lies in close proximity to the vital organs of the body, including the liver, kidneys and other digestive organs, meaning it’s a real health concern. Fat is actually similar to an organ, in that it releases compounds in the blood and alters hormone levels. (4)

Appetite hormones, including ghrelin and leptin, control how hungry or satisfied we feel before, after and between eating. Eating chemically altered foods (which spike cravings), repeat yo-yo dieting, crash dieting, genetic factors and stress can all interfere with appetite regulation.

When fat is stored close to the vital organs, it’s easier for this fat to get into the bloodstream and circulate through the entire body. This leads to problems such as clogged arteries, hypertension and even problems with metabolic functions in the body. Several hormones are involved in accumulation of belly fat, including insulin, ghrelin, leptin and cortisol. Here are some of the ways that the “modern lifestyle” can cause belly fat to start increasing:

8. Paddle off your paunch. Forty-five-year-old Erin Bethea from Akron, OH, attributes her lean tummy to kayaking. When you paddle, she explains, you twist your whole torso. The power comes from your abdominal muscles. “Using proper technique keeps your abs constantly moving,” she says. And to sit erect and paddle a kayak properly, you need to keep your ab muscles taut–sometimes for several hours at a time!

Fermented foods like miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut contain probiotics, a.k.a. friendly bacteria that help boost immunity, regulate gut function, and banish bloat. Unsweetened plain Greek yogurt and skyr can provide probiotic benefits too. Choose ones that have five strains or more of bacterial cultures per 6-ounce serving.

Consumption of beans regularly helps in reducing the belly fat. Beans are rich in fibers, which make your stomach full, and you will consume fewer calories. The fewer calories you will consume, the less would be the chances of getting fat.

When it comes to berries, the deeper the color, the more antioxidants they contain to break down starch into simple sugars, meaning fewer simple sugars are released into the blood stream. This is a major factor when it comes to losing body fat because insulin shuttles any excess sugar straight into the fat cells (54).

Thanks to the no-fat and low-fat craze of the 90s and into the 2000s you’ll still find plenty of low and nonfat items at the grocery store. This instilled the wrong view on fats and labeled all fats as bad. But the body needs healthy fat in order to burn fat, so if you’ve taken to cutting out fat in your diet, it’s time to let some of it back in. Go for foods that contain high levels of the fats we’re after: monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The fat you want to continue to keep out is the saturated fat. Good sources of healthy fats include avocados, olive oil, salmon, and peanut butter. These foods will actually help your fat loss efforts, so don’t be afraid of them.

“Every experience when you are fat is miserable. Meeting new people (they are going to immediately think I’m huge), trying on clothes (god everything is too small, they hardly have anything that fits me, that means 99 per cent of the people who come here are in better shape than I am), going out to eat (everyone is noticing how much I, the fat guy is eating), etc etc.

You can help yourself reduce your tummy fat by adding cinnamon powder on your coffee or tea and watch it stabilize your blood sugar levels. It also retards the rate of food leaving the stomach, thus giving you a satiated feeling for much longer.

Your weight is largely determined by how balance the calories you eat with the energy you burn. If you eat too much and exercise too little, you’re likely to pack on excess pounds — including belly fat.
