After you’re thoroughly warmed up, increase the intensity for 30 seconds — enough that you’re out of breath by the end of the interval — then recover at a slow pace for 90 seconds. Repeat those intervals 10 to 15 times; then cool down. Allow for 48 hours recovery between each HIIT workout to avoid overtraining.
That means Pink Lady over Granny Smith, watermelon over honeydew, red grapes over green ones. The higher levels of nutrients called flavonoids—particularly anthocyanins, compounds that give red fruits their color—calm the action of fat-storage genes. In fact, red-bellied stone fruits like plums boast phenolic compounds that have been shown to modulate the expression of fat genes. Some diets simply don’t work. They’re too restrictive about what pardticipants can eat or they require such a high level of exercise that an average individual can’t maintain the routine long term. What if a diet came along that promised to target stubborn belly fat, but said you don’t have to exercise and that a dessert of dark chocolate is just fine? That’s exactly what the Flat Belly Diet promises. But does it really work?

To banish stubborn belly fat, you have to ramp up your workouts. In a study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, people who completed a high-intensity workout regimen lost more belly fat than those who followed a low-intensity plan. (In fact, the low-intensity exercises experienced no significant changes at all.) “You need to exercise at full intensity because the end goal is to burn more calories, and high intensity exercise does just that,” says Natalie Jill, a San Diego, Calif.-based certified personal trainer. High intensity workouts mean you’re going all out for as long as you can. If this sounds intimidating, think of it this way: you’ll burn more calories in less time.
Flat Belly begins with a restrictive four-day anti-bloat regimen comprised of four 300-calorie meals a day. Lots of baby carrots, cucumbers, skim milk, chicken breast and tilapia will be on the menu. Then you’ll progress to a monthlong eating plan that calls for three 400-calorie meals and one 400-calorie snack a day. Each meal includes a precise amount of one monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), such as 1 cup of soybeans, 1/4 cup of semisweet chocolate chips or 2 tablespoons of olive tapenade. Meals also emphasize lean protein, whole grains, veggies and fruit.
“Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”. Dinner is something, which should be as light as possible because it is that time of the day when your digestive system is preparing to shut down. So avoid eating after 8 pm so as to give your body enough time to digest.
Lunch: Quick Quesadilla. Fill a whole grain or gluten free tortilla with loads of spinach, slices of avocado, and a sprinkle of cheese. Pan fry in coconut oil for a crispy finish or microwave if you’re pressed for time.

Men often refer to their belly fat as “the beer belly”, beer gut, pot-belly or front butt. For men, sudden increase in belly fat can be due to the loss of testosterone levels that results in them suddenly developing belly fat in their later years.
Omega 3 fatty acids are lauded with such attractive qualities as delaying ageing and fighting degenerative diseases. However, it’s less well known that eating fatty fish is also excellent for weight loss (when accompanied by a balanced diet and regular exercise, of course). Foods such as mackerel and herring are high in protein and ‘good fats’ that help to break down some of the more dangerous fats in your body. Try to eat fish twice or thrice a week.
Adding lifestyle changes to an already busy lifestyle can feel uber-stressful, so it’s important to take some time to relax. Constant stress messes with your hormone levels, and it can actually cause hormonal changes that make you gain belly fat – definitely not ideal!
Being on a low-protein diet can also be harmful when it comes to losing belly fat. Proteins are the building blocks, and everything – from your hair to the muscles and hormones – is protein. When you are on a low-protein diet, your muscles become weak, and your body functions slow down. This leads to high stress and inflammation, increased toxicity, and slow metabolism.

Natural yoghurt is rich in protein and makes an excellent snack. Just add a little honey, fruit or granola. Yoghurt contains lactobacillus bacteria, which are the “good” bacteria that improves intestinal function and nutrient absorption and reduces bloating. Furthermore, yogurt can help you not just reduce bloating, but also belly fat. A study from the University of Tennessee showed that people who ate yogurt, as part of their calorie controlled diet, lost more weight, lost more belly fat, lost more inches from around their weight and lost LESS muscle mass. Indeed, they recommended that dieters should eat 3 servings of fat-free or low-fat dairy products every day.
Remember though, that exercise can never compensate for a bad diet. For long term results, the best approach to losing weight and shedding belly fat is still a combination of a balanced diet and the proper exercise –- there’s just no way around this.

Hi Vicky, the best workout for losing weight is a combination of cardio workout (aerobics) and resistance workout (such as weights, bands, your own body weight). Cardio is any movement that gets your heart rate up and increases blood circulation. Most people exercising cardio are using it to burn off excess calories, but there are various forms of exercising cardio, and vigorous cardio is not necessarily one of them. You can do a milder form of aerobics, for example walking but not very fast, or if you go to the gym, the aerobics machines have adjustable levels from easy to hard. You can only do what you can do and you need to adjust the level to your ability (for example shorter walk at a slower pace). If there are times when you cannot do aerobics at all, concentrate on resistance workout. The benefits of resistance workout include improved muscle strength and tone, healthy weight, increased bone density and strength. As you gain muscle, your body burns more calories when at rest. Again, adjust the level of resistance to your abilities and don’t over-do it to avoid extra stress on the body. You can find exercises that you can do at home in my website, for example, exercises for tummy, back, butt and legs and more (use the “search” option).
A handful of almonds packs a serious fat-burning punch: One study of overweight adults found that eating about a quarter-cup of almonds for 6 months led to a 62 percent greater reduction in weight and BMI, thanks to a compound that limits the fat absorbed by the body. And eating just 1.5 ounces of almonds daily led to a reduction in belly and leg fat, a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association showed. For added effect, eat almonds before working out: The amino acid L-arginine can help you burn more fat and carbs.
Vegetables like spinach, kale, collard greens, radish greens, carrot, broccoli, and turnip are rich in vitamins, minerals, water, and dietary fiber. In fact, their calorie content is lower than fruits. These veggies can help reduce belly fat by preventing you from overeating, boosting your metabolism, aiding good digestion, and cleansing the colon. These are low in calories and are the best options to consume as healthy snacks (cucumber, carrot, and beetroot) to curb your junk food cravings.
5. Lie on your left side, supporting your upper body on your left elbow, forearm, and hand. Your elbow should be directly under your shoulder. Slowly lift the rest of your body off the floor, so all that’s touching is your forearm and feet. (Use the other arm to balance. For an advanced move, hold that arm straight up in the air.) Keep your body as straight as possible for maximum effect. Hold as long as is comfortable or until you can no longer maintain good form. Then slowly lower and relax. Repeat on the other side. Do as many times as possible until fatigued. [pagebreak]Here’s a favorite from Virginia Markstein, 30, of Birmingham, AL, who also works on reducing her waistline by using an exercise ball.
