Avocados are a double-whammy to belly fat. First, they’re packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that dim your hunger switches; a study in Nutrition Journal found that participants who ate half a fresh avocado with lunch reported a 40 percent decreased desire to eat for hours afterwards. Second, unsaturated fats like those found in avocados seem to prevent the storage of belly fat.
A daily run or Spin class is great for your heart, but cardio workouts alone won’t do much for your waist. “You need to do a combination of weights and cardiovascular training,” says Sangeeta Kashyap, M.D., an endocrinologist at Cleveland Clinic. Strength training increases muscle mass, which sets your body up to burn more fat. “Muscle burns more calories than fat, and therefore you naturally burn more calories throughout the day by having more muscle,” says Kate Patton, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic. Patton recommends 250 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 125 minutes of high-intensity exercise a week.
Eat at least one good source of healthy fat every day. Monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids help to fight both belly fat and inflammation. These fats are essential to maintaining a desirable body weight as well as preventing disease.
Furthermore, when you are reducing calories the body’s first instinct is to hold onto that belly fat with a vengeance, just in case you are starving and don’t know where the next meal is coming from. After all, your body doesn’t know the difference between a diet and starvation. Therefore, between your 3 main meals have a healthy snack to maintain steady energy levels and avoid junk food binges help you lose belly fat. Eat 3 meals and 2 snacks consisting of all three food groups (carbs, fat and protein) every 3 hours. (Click here for more tips on how to reduce calories.)
7. Work against gravity. Using an L-seat at the gym to do hanging leg lifts is one of the best exercises for your midsection. You’re using the weight of your own legs against gravity. To do it: Support yourself on an L-seat with your forearms, legs hanging straight. Using your midsection muscles, slowly pull your knees up toward your chest and then lower. Keep your back against the seat, and don’t swing your legs. For a more advanced move, keep your legs straight as you lift them.
The Flat Belly Diet by Prevention Magazine editor-in-chief Liz Vaccariello and Cynthia Sass, RD, promises readers the tools they need to lose belly fat for good without doing a single crunch and while dropping up to 15 pounds in 32 days.
Another related study has shown that consuming chocolate at least 2 times a week enables to lower artery calcification by up to 32%. Consuming chocolate less frequently has been proven to have no effect (75).
You can incorporate high-intensity intervals into your basic cardio workouts by adding high-intensity sprints to your runs, rides, and swims. But if you really want more bang for your buck, perform compound strength training to build muscle, burn calories, and sculpt abs. We’re talking burpees, weighted squats and thrusters, and pull-ups.
Straighten up and your figure look better right away, advises The Biggest Loser trainer Kim Lyons. “When your posture is good, you’re automatically engaging and toning your stomach muscles,” she says. If you need to remind yourself to stand tall, a few strategically-placed sticky notes should do the trick.

Stop treating your kitchen like an all-night diner and you’ll stop seeing those unwanted pounds piling onto your frame, too. The results of a study published in Cell Metabolism found that mice who only had access to food during an eight-hour period stayed slim over the course of the study, while those who ate the same number of calories over a 16-hour period gained significantly more weight, particularly around their middle. When you’re finished with dinner at night, shut the fridge and don’t look back until morning — your belly will thank you. When you do head back to the kitchen in the A.M., make sure the 40 Things Healthy Cooks Always Have in Their Kitchen are there waiting for you.
A review of more than 90 studies in the journal Nutrition Reviews revealed a strong link between high calcium intake and improved body composition. When your calcium is low, your body secretes hormones that let you make better use of the calcium you have. Problem is, at the same time, your body signals fat cells to hold onto fat, including the fat in your belly. Dairy, including milk (even whole milk, just watch your calories), cheese (especially Swiss), and yogurt, are the preferred sources of calcium. Eat three servings of dairy a day, and keep the rest of your diet in check, and you will steadily lose weight.
3. Twist: One foot placed slightly in front of the other with body facing the corner. This should resemble the movement of wringing a towel while taking knees further “inward” and opening body in the opposite direction. Start with knees bent and straighten with the twist by lifting the hip and leading it to the opposite corner.10 reps each side, then 10 again (total of 20, alternating after 10)
Some people get overly jittery from yohimbine, so I recommend you start with .1 mg/kg of body weight to assess tolerance. If you feel fine, then increase to the clinically effective dosage of .2 mg/kg.
Cayenne pepper: Hot peppers will increase your heart rate, make you sweat, and boost your metabolic rate at the same time. They are also one the best foods to reduce inflammation in your body. Capsaicin, found in cayenne pepper, can increase calories burned after consumption. A study in the British Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when subjects consumed capsaicin for weight maintenance, fat oxidation (the breakdown of fat) was increased. Capsaicin may also stimulate the production of AMPK, leading to further breakdown of fat. Try adding cayenne pepper to recipes like chicken tenders for an extra fat-burning effect or try a detox drink with cayenne pepper.
I’ve been fat/chubby since birth. I have been in and out of many diet programs. Some worked just for a few weeks only, very frustrating. What worked for me is the Banana Diet, with some variation. I started the diet February 18, 2009 and has maintained a good weight until now. Even if I have to eat bad sometimes, it’s so easy to lose weight again.
If you are ready to burn off belly fat and make lifestyle changes that will help you maintain a healthy weight, the belly fat diet plan can help. The belly fat diet plan isn’t some crazy fad, it’s a comprehensive plan. These are the main principles of the belly fat diet plan (which you should follow for a lifetime):
I prefer health related books that are more scientific in nature, this book seemed to lack such backing. And I found this book to be narrow in its view of health (focusing primarily on monounsaturated fats without much regard for anything else health related), probably because this book is marketed as a diet book more than a health book. Nonetheless, I found the book’s intense focus on monounsaturated fats and the good they do for your body helpful. And I like the simple approach of breaking dow …more
5. Lie on your left side, supporting your upper body on your left elbow, forearm, and hand. Your elbow should be directly under your shoulder. Slowly lift the rest of your body off the floor, so all that’s touching is your forearm and feet. (Use the other arm to balance. For an advanced move, hold that arm straight up in the air.) Keep your body as straight as possible for maximum effect. Hold as long as is comfortable or until you can no longer maintain good form. Then slowly lower and relax. Repeat on the other side. Do as many times as possible until fatigued. [pagebreak]Here’s a favorite from Virginia Markstein, 30, of Birmingham, AL, who also works on reducing her waistline by using an exercise ball.
The best practice in getting rid of the excess poundage was combining good eating habits, exercise, proper sleep, and stress reduction. Melting away belly fat can help you lead a longer, healthier life.
Time and time again, we are spinning our wheels trying to change our exercise program in an attempt to get rid of the belly fat, when in reality it is the diet program that needs to be manipulated and experimented with the most. Despite claims we are “eating right,” many times we don’t realize that if we are not getting the results in fat loss, then no matter how good we are eating, it is not good enough. Your metabolic formula is different from everyone else, and you need to stop being the dieter and start being the fat loss detective. Remember: Diet is the most crucial element in body change and fat loss. Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.
You’ll get the best results from less intense sprints and longer rest intervals. Once you’ve warmed up, work at a slightly higher intensity for 2 minutes, then rest at a lower intensity for 5 to 6 minutes — until your heart rate goes back to your pre-interval rate, then repeat the interval 2 to 3 times.
Until my divorce I worked hard everyday managing the small farm, acreage, household, home-schooling 4 girls, errands, leading 4-H, teaching sunday school etc…my world collapsed, shortly after I found I had ground down my femur at the hip and needed a replacement, before I could do that I developed a perforated ulcer, suddenly from relative health to within a few years 2 major surgeries, then had surgery on one of my arthritic feet. Obviously, inflammation is something I don’t want but few seem to know anything about it and the causes, so I try to “keep it simple” and pay attention to how my joints feel after eating and added cartilage, glucosomine/MSM, nettle leaf, and cod liver oil capsules to my daily supplements. However, as the inactivity due to pain, continued to some degree after the surgeries I continued to gain weight, especially after I was starved after my ulcer surgery. My doctor said, “stop eating.” I know that most of the time I eat a very healthy diet so I eliminated the occasional ice cream, and reduced my carbs, keep it lean, lots of cooked frozen vegies, but what can one do if vigorous aerobic activity is difficult or some days to pull off? Can you help me to figure out how to get rid of the “fat belly” when aerobics is tough to do? Thank you
Liquid sugar is even worse in this regard. Liquid calories don’t get “registered” by the brain in the same way as solid calories, so when you drink sugar-sweetened beverages, you end up eating more total calories (9, 10).
I tried the Flat Belly Diet and stuck with it for about 8 months (then I got pregnant…lol…) and I lost 43 pounds on it! I lost 6 pounds the first week alone! It is this diet’s simplicity that attracted me to it… If you follow the diet’s instructions and get a bit exercise as well, it should work for you too. Here is the biggest reason why most diets don’t work – we think of them as DIETS! Make the Flat Belly Diet food your LIFESTYLE – don’t be on a DIET but have a HEALTHY diet. Eat healthy and be healhy… It’s common sense, really…
Men tend to store more belly fat than women and it’s one of the reasons men have more coronary disease than women. Women tend to be protected before menopause, when their fat tends to be stored on the buttocks and thighs (the “pear” shape”). At menopause, however, women’s fat tends to settle in the belly, and this fat is much more dangerous than buttocks fat and greatly increases a woman’s risk of death from heart disease.

I have looked at other diets and this diet is not anything different, It is still a 1600 calorie diet. the most obvious item that I noticed is the name dropping that occurs in this book. I also don’t think that the average person could even find half of the “organic” ingredients this diet requires much less afford the same. I agreed to look at this diet at the request of my physician, looking is all I am going to do.
Some great sources of fiber include various whole grain products, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans. These, by the way, are foods that are also rich in other nutrients your body craves naturally. Processed foods, however, are poor sources of fiber. White flour products including regular pasta is in this category. Also, watch out for high fiber cereals as many of these are also high in sugar. If a person wants to lose belly fat naturally they have to realize process foods are a no-no.
Most scientific evidence suggests that a calorie-controlled diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, beans, nuts, seeds, lean meat, fish, eggs, and poultry is the foundation for a diet that provides all the nutrients you need while helping to whittle your waistline. Weight loss experts recommend combining this diet with 30 to 60 minutes of exercise most days of the week.

“The culprit making your tummy bloat? It could be the salt in your diet. Use natural sea salt or kosher salt, which is lower in sodium teaspoon for teaspoon than traditional table salts. And stay away from soy sauce: Even low-sodium soy sauce is still high in sodium and will cause practically instant bloating.
