Many women also notice an increase in belly fat as they get older — even if they aren’t gaining weight. This is likely due to a decreasing level of estrogen, which appears to influence where fat is distributed in the body.

Overall, men tend to store fat in the abdominal area more than women do, thanks to sex hormone differences. Before age 40, women tend to store most of their fat in the hips, thighs, and buttocks. After 40, as estrogen levels drop, body fat is redistributed to the abdomen.

When fat is stored close to the vital organs, it’s easier for this fat to get into the bloodstream and circulate through the entire body. This leads to problems such as clogged arteries, hypertension and even problems with metabolic functions in the body. Several hormones are involved in accumulation of belly fat, including insulin, ghrelin, leptin and cortisol. Here are some of the ways that the “modern lifestyle” can cause belly fat to start increasing:

Cut down on sugar: Sugar contains no nutrients; it just provides empty calories that your body doesn’t use. It causes blood sugar rushes and insulin spikes. Try to cut down on baked goods and heavily processed cereals that contain lots of sugar.

Dinner: Steak Kabobs. Think steak is off limits in a healthy diet? Think again! Lean cuts of beef can provide much needed iron and vitamins. With plenty of veggies, these kabobs are a great choice: http://www.recipe.com/beef-and-vegetable-kabobs/ *omit sugar in recipe and use stevia or honey instead. Appetite hormones, including ghrelin and leptin, control how hungry or satisfied we feel before, after and between eating. Eating chemically altered foods (which spike cravings), repeat yo-yo dieting, crash dieting, genetic factors and stress can all interfere with appetite regulation.

According to bodybuilder Tom Venuto, whole grains should be included in a fat-burning diet. Whole grains supply soluble fiber that aids in digestion. In addition to oats and oat bran, whole grains include barley, whole wheat, brown rice and spelt.

So cook up some oatmeal—and top it with some fruit. What’s so magical about this combination? Each provides insoluble fiber that helps reduce blood cholesterol and feeds the healthy bacteria in your gut. By doing so, you trigger your gut to produce butyrate, a fatty acid that reduces fat-causing inflammation throughout your body. In a Canadian study, researchers discovered that those whose diets were supplemented with insoluble fiber had higher levels of ghrelin—a hormone that controls hunger. (Try these two-minute oatmeal recipes that’ll make you an oatmeal fan forever.)

Hi Vicky, the best workout for losing weight is a combination of cardio workout (aerobics) and resistance workout (such as weights, bands, your own body weight). Cardio is any movement that gets your heart rate up and increases blood circulation. Most people exercising cardio are using it to burn off excess calories, but there are various forms of exercising cardio, and vigorous cardio is not necessarily one of them. You can do a milder form of aerobics, for example walking but not very fast, or if you go to the gym, the aerobics machines have adjustable levels from easy to hard. You can only do what you can do and you need to adjust the level to your ability (for example shorter walk at a slower pace). If there are times when you cannot do aerobics at all, concentrate on resistance workout. The benefits of resistance workout include improved muscle strength and tone, healthy weight, increased bone density and strength. As you gain muscle, your body burns more calories when at rest. Again, adjust the level of resistance to your abilities and don’t over-do it to avoid extra stress on the body. You can find exercises that you can do at home in my website, for example, exercises for tummy, back, butt and legs and more (use the “search” option).

Haven’t given it up Diane… actually eat about 3 cups per day currently. I go through “spurts” of diet changes. Right now I am training quite hard (weights, sprinting, etc) so my body really responds to elevated carb intake. Oatmeal is perfect for this for me. Probably not everyone, but for me personally I love the stuff.
