Twenty four weeks on the New York Times best seller list and AOL’s #1 searched diet in 2008, Flat Belly Diet became the eating plan everyone was buzzing about and solidified Cynthia’s reputation as a visionary expert and the go-to resource for nutrition and weight management. Flat Belly Diet! Cookbook, which Cynthia also co-authored was also a New York Times best seller.
This easy a.m. ritual works on two levels. First, a recent study found that exposure to sunlight in between the hours of 8 am and noon reduced your risk of weight gain regardless of activity level, caloric intake, or age. Researchers speculate that the morning light synchronizes your metabolism and undercuts your fat genes. And burning calories before you eat means you’re exercising in a fasted state—the energy you burn comes right from your fat stores, instead of the food you ate. But what really stunned Martha was the improvement in her heart health. Before starting Zero Belly Diet, Martha’s heart rate would typically soar to 112 beats per minute (bpm) within moments of starting her exercise bike workout. “After the first week and a half I could not raise my heart rate over 96 bpm with the same workout. It was great to see change in the mirror, and even better to know good things were happening that I couldn’t even see.”
PCD might not be an official diagnosis (yet), but when it comes to weight loss, the struggle is real. Hayim paints the picture well: “You and your boyfriend or husband have decided to commit yourselves to wellness. You both begin the journey together, waking up early, eating healthy for about a week or so. But your partner begins to fall off the trail, and he’s skipping the early morning workouts. But not you, you’re still on track day after day. A few weeks go by like this and you realize he’s sleeping in and seeing results, and you aren’t,” says Hayim. Sound familiar? “Well, stop comparing! Women, you will never be able to accurately compare your body composition to your male partner. We will generally have a higher percentage of body fat than men, despite eating proportionally fewer calories. In fact, a healthy range of body fat for women is 20-25 percent, compared to men who are at a healthy range from 10-15 percent,” she adds. Bottom line: Don’t beat yourself up, and quit measuring yourself against your beau.
When you add supposed “foods that burn belly fat” like avocados into the mix, you impede this process. As an example, avocados (which I love by the way – in moderation) contain over 300 calories, 90% of which are fat.
13. Discover Pilates. This series of stretching-type exercises done on the floor and on special equipment has been used by dancers for decades. But now New Yorker Margaret Klugman, 55, (and hundreds of others including many celebrities) attribute their tight abs to this low-impact form of exercise. For a list of studios and instructors near you, contact the United States Pilates Association at 888-484-8772. Or visit their website at www.pilates-studio.com.
2. Pass On The Processed. You’ll notice this plan eliminates processed foods; aim to avoid processed foods whenever possible. When you do need processed options, look for choices with recognizable, whole food ingredients.
Wondering why we are talking about sleeping here? Adequate sleep is very important for weight management. Everyone needs six to eight hours of sleep. According to a recent study, too much of sleep or the lack of it can lead to weight gain.
Saturated fat is bad??? Come on. What century are you living in?! Uh…you might need the saturated fat for things like hormone production and cellular integrity, no? You have seen the recent studies debunking the idiotic myth that saturated fat is bad for us, correct?
Research suggests that the consumption of high amounts of refined grains, basically refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, refined-grain pasta and sugary drinks may encourage greater levels of belly fat. Indeed, a study found that people who ate 4 to 5 daily servings of white bread, gained significantly more belly fat than those who only ate 1 serving of white bread, despite consuming the same amount of calories. Research also shows that trans fat (found in vegetable shortenings, margarine, cookies, snack foods, crackers, and other foods made with, or fried in, partially hydrogenated oils), can change your body shape causing body fat to be redistributed to your belly. In other words, trans fats increase belly fat. A study in which monkeys were fed trans fats, published in the journal Obesity, showed that their waists were 30% larger than the waists of monkeys that were given monounsaturated fats. Not only that, trans fats increase total body fat. Saturated fat is also linked to belly fat.
A scoop of guacamole is one of the most effective fat-burning, hunger-squashing snacks known to man. Not only are avocados rich in vitamin B6—which directly counteracts the belly-fat-building stress hormone, cortisol—they’re also full of monounsaturated fat. This healthy fat may actually prevent body fat distribution around the belly by down-regulating the expression of certain fat genes, according to research in the journal Diabetes Care. These same satiating fats may also be the reason behind another study that found people who ate half a fresh avocado with lunch reported a 40 percent decreased desire to eat for hours afterward.
A 2007 study published in the scientific journal Diabetes Care reveals what you need to do to move fat away from your midsection. Over the course of the study, every participant was put on three different diet plans for one month each–two are relevant to our discussion so I’ll focus on those:
Another good thing about the book is that even if you know about nutrition and the proper way to eat, it can sometimes be difficult to do so. Some people do much better following a “diet” that provides all of the rules and regiment to stick to. This would be a good book for that type of person.
To lose belly fat naturally you should transition into a belly-flattening lifestyle, in order to do that you need to make a few key dietary alterations that will help you reduce belly fat. You can make these changes gradually over time. The more regularly you stick with these changes, the better your results will be.
How does it work? Spikes in blood sugar, which you get when eating a high carb diet, signal your body to store fat in the abdominal area. However, monounsaturated fats counter these spikes in blood sugar, keeping blood sugar levels steady and thus preventing belly fat accumulation.
Circuit Weight Training (20 minutes, 4 exercises — squat/press, push-up/rows, back row, lunge/curl) — Do 12 of each exercise and immediately go to the next one. Don’t take structured rests, instead push until you can’t and rest until you can (what we call rest-based training). See how many rounds you can do in 20 minutes.
Don’t buy your tickets to Bonnaroo just yet; the kind of acid that will help you slim down is the stuff right inside your cabinet. A 12-week study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry reveals that obese study subjects who made vinegar part of their diet dropped more belly fat than a control group, and other suggests that acidic foods, like vinegar, can increase the human carbohydrate metabolism by as much as 40 percent.
Test panelist Bryan Wilson, a 29-year-old accountant, lost 19 pounds and an astounding 6 inches from his waist in just six weeks on the program, and he attributes his success to Zero Belly Smoothies. Their vegan protein will give you the same fat-burning, hunger-squelching, muscle-building benefits of whey, without the bloat. “I love the shakes. I added them to my diet, and almost immediately I lost the bloat,” Bryan said. “I’m a sweet craver, and the shakes were an awesome alternative to bowls and bowls of ice cream I would have had.”
4. Bananas – This is a fruit you can enjoy as a nutritious snack without ever worrying about gaining weight. Like apples, it contains a fiber called pectin that is known to inhibit colon cancer. It also contains vitamin A, C, E, B6 as well as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Bananas, depending upon the size, contain calories between 75 calories to 135 calories only.
Instead of racing around 24/7 to finish your to-do list, take 30 minutes to an hour at night to unwind, whether that means taking a luxurious bubble bath (with lavender- or chamomile-scented suds for relaxing aromatherapy), spending a few minutes meditating and reflecting on the day or trying a few relaxing yoga poses (as a bonus, these stretch out tight hip and chest muscles to improve your posture).

The International Journal of Obesity mentions that consuming foods that have thermogenic effect can potentially be a tool for weight loss and weight maintenance as they may increase energy expenditure, fat oxidation and counteract the decrease in metabolic rate that happens during weight loss.5
Keep those fluids coming! “Being dehydrated causes the body to hoard water,” Lyon says, leading you to carry up to four excess pounds around your midsection. Aim for at least eight cups of water or other fluids daily.
Next thing you know, fat sneaks up on the surface—subcutaneous fat—and wraps around your insides where you can’t see it, creating dangerous visceral fat. Ultimately, insulin resistance can set in, leading to diabetes and other health issues. So what do you do?
